I didn’t run it, in fact have never done a race that far, but my family did.  My sister, Heather, and my dad both finished the half marathon in under 2 hours this weekend, which is awesome for just over 13 miles!  Heather is still plugging away at her 12 for 12 (1 race per month) for the year, though I think her average is much higher than one a month.  Heather finished the half faster than she anticipated, but wants to up her game for the marathon in her future. My dad was less happy with the race, he loves the 5-8 milers. He said he didn’t want to run it again, though I think we can talk him into it. Maybe next time it will be a marathon.  My other sister, Megan and her husband, Luke planned to run but unfortunately had some kind of law exams that took precedence.  I wish I was closer, I would definitely have liked to keep my family company in this event.

But, sigh, I am 1500 miles away.  So, instead I went out and ran by myself this weekend. I did run a little over 10 miles in their honor. I ran out of trail or maybe I would have gone farther. It was a beautiful day, so the distance didn’t feel bad.  It helped that the sun was out, to keep me motivated.

I hope to schedule some family races soon. I actually enjoy running alone, but it is exciting to have our own pack.

We woke up to a couple fresh inches of snow. When the temperature dropped late last night the freezing rain transformed into white whispers of snow, sealing the deal for a white Christmas. It’s perfect since we’ll hardly be stepping outside today except to throw a few snowballs.

We kicked off our movie-watching-spree with Cars, which we watched last night. A movie Kristine’s Mom remembered I had wanted to watch while we were in Idaho, but which we couldn’t find in their movie collection. It was an extremely thoughtful gift. Thank you, Hull Family! We’ll continue to watch movies, play mancala, and share each others’ company all day (with the exception for the time I snuck away to write this). I think Flash Dance is on deck for our next flick.

My Mom made the traditional Wilde Rice Pancakes this morning. They were fluffy and delicious as always. We miss my Dad’s absence this Christmas while he spends a few more days working hard down in Ecuador, he’ll be back right before New Years. We all send you a big hug and a Merry Christmas. Kristine and I also wish all our family and friends a Happy Christmas and all the best this holiday season.

I stretched a piece of fabric across our bedroom to make up a low-budget photo studio. I have lamps hanging out that I have some control over, I even made a shade for one with a a plastic tray and a tissue to diffuse the light. I started to get everyone physced about a Christmas picture and slowly people trickled into my photo studio. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the fabric I stretched out wasn’t quiet wide enough to comfortably accomodate all of us, so we had to sandwich to make this thing happen. Here it goes.

I begin to adjust the exposure with Kristine looking skeptically at me.

Kristine walks out to put on make-up and my Mom strolls in.

I snap one with my Mom.

The three girls are finally all in the picture. We’re not sure how to arrange everyone, but it works out beautifully!

My brother is a little stubborn about the picture, but we coaxed him into his favorite rugby shirt.

It takes both women to keep him in the picture!

A couple more outtakes gets us near the final picture.

A calm moment between pictures catches Kristine looking serene with laugher behind her.

I ruined this near perfect picture by rubbing my head against my brother’s chest, Kristine also did a good job by staring at the ground.

Finally! This was it. The picture for the family album.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Today, while you all eat your turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, Jonathan and I will be enjoying our last day here in Vegas, at the Red Rocks. We will cram as much climbing as possible into our last day, and (hopefully) since it is a holiday we won’t have crowds to contend with.

We have been here for three fantastic weeks. While not a fan of Vegas, the rocks have held our attention and enthusiasm. We could easily stay another month and still not have done 1/2 of the climbs here. This gives us a good excuse to come back and send the climbs that challenged us on this trip and venture out to try more of the ones we haven’t yet experienced.

Our trip has been so fun and full of adventures, the time has flown by. It is hard to believe that it is already Thanksgiving – a big mile marker signaling only a few weeks left until Christmas, the end of the road (for awhile).  I suppose there are definite signs that we have been on the road – Jonathan’s ever growing beard, the state of our small wardrobe (dirty and increasing in number of holes), the stronger climbing ability and leaner bodies. I guess we have been doing this awhile.

Tomorrow we head south to Arizona to spend a few days with some friends in Tucson. We will enjoy their company, some good food, and some time playing outdoors. Jonathan & I are still a bit unsure of our plans after Tucson – maybe we will meet up with Ben for a soak (his hot spring pass time), climb in some local crags, head back to California for some time in Joshua Tree, or let the wind blow us  somewhere new like New Mexico.

To all our family and friends we send our love – enjoy your feasts, the long weekend, and the half marathon (good luck Heather!) – Happy Thanksgiving!
